How to make a Simple Collagraph Print

In this post I’ll will share my collagraph ideas

Creating a collagraph print can be a fun and exciting way to express yourself in a unique and interesting way. The process of making a collagraph print can also be relatively simple and cost-effective and solvent free . In this post, i will go over the easy steps to create a collagraph print.

1. Gather Materials:

Before you begin, you will need to gather all the materials you will need to create your collagraph print. This includes basic art supplies like a board, an ink roller, and printmaking paper. You will also need a variety of items to use for the collage, small box, cereal boxs , netting, old wallpaper anything with a shiny waxy surface .

2. Prepare the Board:

Once all the materials have been gathered, the first step is to prepare the board. Begin by finding a perspex sheet or old picture frame with plastic glass. This will form the base which to lay out your materiel

3. Create the Collage:

I have started with a sweet box and unfolded it , looking at it keep turning it round and think what could it possibly be. Then on the waxy side make your marks with a dry point needle and possibly remove some of the waxy surface to make darker bits.

4. Create a back ground

This can be made from lots of different materials You want to create something that relates to the object you create. I have used cereal boxes and ripped them up to have jagged edges to represent hills. Some of the smaller bits look like clouds

5. Inking up

For the bull made from the sweet packaging i have rubbed in the ink and wiped off ink with some kitchen roll For the back grown i have used a roller to ink up The ink i have used are Akua intaglio soy based ink

6. Paper

Pre soaked thick artpaper 200gsm to 300 gsm in a water pack or water bath. The paper wants to be damp and not wet

7. Printing

This can be done by hand with a wooden spoon which gives an interesting effect but it takes a bit of work . But it is easier is to use a printing press if you cannot afford one or do not have a printing club near you. Then you could look at a cold laminator or craft press instead.
